how to avoid noise and electromagnetic interference  (EMI) in electroluminescent lamp design

when designer design electroluminescent (EL) lamp circuit, the noise and electromagnetic interference (EMI) is two non avoid problems.the EMI  problem in wireless handheld devices was particularly prominent.Because of excessive EMI even affect the sensitivity of the radio transceiver.

The physical causes of noise:
1.when impulse current flows through the drive circuit,it is considerable strength,Lead inductance, or other electrical components vibration or vibration sensors other components.electroluminescent designer need adjusted Oscillation frequency or replace a good inductor to solve the problem.
2.EL lamp which driven by high-voltage show piezoelectric effect, it lead to Vibration noise.electroluminescent designer Can replacing EL lamp or improve  EL lamp assembly process to resolve.
The main reason of EMI :
when impulse current flow driver circuit , interrelated components arises Electromagnetic Leakage during Inverter.electroluminescent designer can replace component or add Shielding Design in PCB board to solve the problem.

It is important to emphasize that the different EL lamp chip wthich the principle of work of internal circuit is different,so the corresponding drive circuit generate noise and the strength of EMI also is  different.for example: generation directly cause of EL Lamp noise is The driving voltage waveform synthesis.EL lamp use sinusoidal voltage driver. But EL lamp driver is a pure sine wave, but a similar sine wave composed of pulse envelope of sawtooth wave.Start Up light source (SUSL) EL Drive chip Output wave that  Every half a sine wave component of 16-64 pulse and stepped voltage is very small. So the driving voltage dc component and EMI is smaller and basically avoided noise in question.

Monaco, November 2005 – Drawing on expertise from DuPont’s electronics business, DuPont Cosmetic Solutions has adopted the latest advances in electroluminescent technology to bring the exceptional transparency of DuPont ™ Surlyn ® resin to the fore. The result: striking, illuminated Point of Sale (POS) displays and cosmetic packaging concepts that capture the imagination, help differentiate cosmetics packaging and set new standards in shelf appeal. According to the company, new concepts for illuminated bottles, jars, closures and displays, some of them in combination with other aesthetic materials such as DuPont ™ Corian ® surfaces, are currently being developed. The incorporation of electro luminescent technology represents just one of a number of unique solutions being developed by DuPont for the cosmetic industry – others include nomadic perfume delivery systems, sample testers and thick-walled, transparent polymer bottles. This particular innovation, presented for the first time by DuPont Cosmetic Solutions at Luxe Pack 2005, is based upon the use of conducting, insulating and luminescent inks, developed by DuPont Microcircuit Materials (MCM), which are suitable for manufacturing printed electroluminescent “lamps”. Working closely with an alliance partner, skilled in the screen-printing of electronic circuitry to manufacture the lamps, it is possible, for example, to miniaturise all components as Sun to integrate them into cosmetic packaging. Shielded by a tough, transparent outer-layer of Surlyn ® resin, the result is an enticing illumination of the packaging, with effects such as a warm glow, likely to catch the eye of the passing-consumer “We are excited by the tremendous market potential of this technological advance. By miniature ising components – the battery is the size of a watch battery and the converter a size of a paperclip – we are now able to offer a cost-effective, unique alternative for cosmetic displays that can really set products apart from the competition, “says Ralph Wares, global design team leader for DuPont Cosmetic Solutions. “In addition, electroluminescent lighting promotes and encourages the use of Surlyn ® in cosmetic packaging – its toughness combined with its glass-like transparency complements the new technology to produce a unique, appealing packaging solution, able to withstand the wear-and-tear of today’s retail environment. “Marketed by DuPont MCM under the name DuPont ™ Luxprint ®, the technology package comprises the luminescent inks as well as other materials, such as a transparent sputtered ITO (Indium Tin Oxide) polyester substrate and the power source. Though the lifetime of the lamps illuminated depends on their size, trials with prototypes have demonstrated one week continuous operation. There is, however, a possibility to incorporate pressure switches in the design of the container to enable the controlled activation and deactivation of the lamps. Another advantage: the phosphors used in Luxprint ® EL inks are Microencapsulated to prevent the penetration of moisture and prolong the useful life of Thus the lamps. The polymer binders in the inks have therefore been selected to provide a barrier to moisture. Finally, all inks are mutually compatible, and provide excellent adhesion to polyester film or other common substrates.

blinded window?it is a EL lighting”BrightBlind”

Posted by:  /  Tags: , , , , ,

Window-less rooms can benefit from the faux-portal that is Makoto Hirahara’s Bright Blind, mimicking your classic blinded window. The electroluminescent(EL) slats lit by a hidden light source are so convincing, we’d be fooled at first glance. Bright Blind operates identically to its “real” cousin, with the turning rod controlling the intensity of light.

“What is the way to what the windows,” visible “window” has a very rich semantics, we have one window and  connected outside world. It is common and essential, if your lack of window space, you can consider this light to rule out depression or boring. This is like a lamp with shutters, made with the EL cold light slice, the operation and the shutters on the same way.

LED lighting in China’s development policy under the low carbon economy

Semiconductor lighting (LED lighting), is developed in 90′s of last century a new generation of cold light source with incomparable advantages of traditional light sources: energy saving, environmental protection (no mercury and other harmful substances), long life (50,000 hours) and reduce maintenance costs, provide better lighting quality, improved lighting effects and safety. Semiconductor lighting (LED lighting), is developed in 90′s of last century a new generation of cold light source with incomparable advantages of traditional light sources: energy saving, environmental protection (no mercury and other harmful substances), long life (50,000 hours) and reduce maintenance costs, provide better lighting quality, improve lighting efficacy and safety of visual, these are so many basic LED technology in the construction of more and more applications get. Modern human civilization’s energy crisis warns us: energy saving imperative, resource development and utilization of the need for sustainable development. Since 2003, most of the country suffered a new round of power shortages. Power shortage for the power development, but also led us to alternative energy and new energy in China. China is mainly from thermal energy, and thermal power generation using oil and coal, due to skyrocketing oil prices result in increased cost of power generation, while coal will produce large amounts of carbon dioxide greenhouse. To address the energy issue, China’s main set in both directions: the development of new energy and energy-saving target to the 2010-2012 alternative energy will provide 15% -30% of its energy needs, and our lighting energy consumed in the total electricity consumption of 1 / 6, such as domestic 1 / 3 LED instead of incandescent lamps is a year that the country could save an annual power generation of Three Gorges Project. The development of LED lighting in line with our industrial development strategy, China attaches great importance to the development of the semiconductor industry, unveiled a series of policies to promote development of related industries: in June 2003, the Joint Science and Technology Ministry of Information Industry, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Construction, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Light Industry Federation and other units coordinated the establishment of National Semiconductor Lighting Project Leading Group, National Semiconductor Lighting Project for emergency starts. In early 2006, the State Council promulgated the “Medium and Long Term Science and Technology Development Plan”, “energy efficient, long life semiconductor lighting products” to be included in the first long-term planning focus areas (energy) of the first priority theme (industrial energy efficiency ), attracted wide attention at home and abroad. July 2006, the Ministry of Construction announced the “” Eleventh Five-Year “Plan Town Green Lighting Project,” in the clear that to achieve the per unit GDP energy consumption reduction target of 20%, stressed the need to implement resource conservation and environmental protection requirements building low-input, high output, low power consumption, less emissions, can cycle, sustainable national economic system and resource-saving, environment-friendly society, and to the “green light – in public facilities, hotels, shopping centers, office buildings and in the promotion of efficient energy-saving residential lighting systems, “as one of ten key projects energy. October 2006, the National “Eleventh Five-Year” Plan 863 “Semiconductor Lighting Project” was officially launched major projects. In 2007 led by the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Information Industry, State Administration of Taxation and other ministries to begin drafting “further encourage the software industry and IC industry development in a number of policy”, that is of common concern by the industry, “Semiconductor New Deal. “drafted in the semiconductor industry to support the new policy include the” five year exemption and five half “of the enterprise income tax preferential policies, research and development tax (to take credit and tax cuts and use the way), and semiconductor capital equipment duty-free and fixed on the integrated circuit design arrangements for special financial support and so on. In April 2007 for supporting the development of LED and solar PV industry growth, Fujian Province promulgated the “Fujian Province to promote the development of LED and solar photovoltaic industry views the implementation (2007-2010)” is China’s first such policy issued provinces, Fujian Province have also launched LED and photovoltaic electronic test platform, LED and photovoltaic applications design platform and many other LED and photovoltaic industries of public technical service platform construction.
July 2007, the State Council issued “on the establishment of government energy-saving products procurement system of compulsory notification” (Guo Ban Fa [2007] 51), made clear that government agencies at all levels of financial funds for government procurement in technology, service and other indicators to meet the procurement needs of the premise, to give priority to purchasing energy efficient products, some energy savings, performance and other products that meet the requirements, the implementation of compulsory purchase. August 2007, explicitly required the Ministry of Construction, the city shall not use a wide range of main roads in urban areas and more garden lighting decorative lighting, landscape lighting is prohibited to use powerful searchlights, high power floodlights, massive neon, color bubble, the U.S. anti- high brightness high energy light lamps. September 10, 2007, the Ministry of Construction announced “the” Eleventh Five-Year “Plan Town Green Lighting Project”, under the “planning” in the next five years, China will vigorously promote the city green light to the end of 2005 as the base, the Town Lighting Festival electricity target of 5%, by 2010, city lighting energy efficient lighting application rate will reach 85%. November 2007, the provisions of the State Council issued a document from 2008 onwards, the local provincial officials in China will begin to hand over to the central energy-saving responses, if transcripts will face accountability and not pass the “one vote veto.” November 26, 2007, Deputy Minister of Finance Zhang Shaochun, 26, held in the national financial work conference on energy conservation, said the central government arranged 23.5 billion yuan that year to support energy conservation. November 29, 2007, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the 28th China-EU Business Summit in a keynote speech, said the next five years, China’s investment in energy-saving environmental protection will reach 300 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 30% of the world market. January 10, 2008, the Ministry of Finance, National Development and Reform Commission jointly issued the “financial subsidies to promote efficient lighting products Interim Measures on Management of funds” (wealth building [2007] 1027). National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Finance will be issued by approved financial subsidies to promote efficient task lighting products, the provincial energy department in conjunction with the financial sector to develop specific implementation plan, organize successful enterprises in promoting missions, ensure the realization of the “Eleventh Five-Year” period through fiscal subsidies, to promote efficient lighting products 150 000 000, may be saving 29 billion kwh, to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 29 million tons. April 2008, the Ministry of Finance, National Development and Reform Commission held a national conference to promote efficient lighting products, the state financial subsidies to the official launch energy-saving lamps. Almost a year, several major cities in China office lighting places the smooth progress of the program to promote energy-saving lamps, LED lighting in urban and rural household is steadily in progress. October 2008, China launched the “Energy Conservation Ordinance, public institutions,” all levels of government units shall be energy efficient products and equipment incorporated in the centralized procurement catalog, and strictly monitor the status of energy consumption. Also published “Energy conservation regulations” require the construction unit shall select the appropriate renewable energy for heating, cooling, lighting and hot water supply. Because of these two regulations to implement and provide local government procurement LED energy-saving products and other related legal basis at all levels of government units in 2009 will gradually implement energy conservation policies, and a large number of procurement-related energy-saving products, is expected to Shanghai in 2010 World Expo should continue after the Olympics, setting off another wave of LED peak demand. November 5, 2008 the State Council executive meeting to determine the current ten further measures to promote economic growth and financial strength to pry 4 trillion of domestic demand. Huge infrastructure projects to the LED lighting companies have aimed at the development of this rare opportunity. November 25, 2008, the Ministry of Transport Planning, Li Xinghua, deputy director of the Ministry of Transport in the regular press conference that the Ministry of Transport 2009, the transport infrastructure investment will strive to reach 1 trillion. Direction of investment include not only highway, national and provincial trunk and rural roads, will also include the coastal ports, inland waterway and transport hub port ancillary infrastructure. 1 trillion of investment in the total estimated investment in the expressway will reach 400 000 000 000 -5,000 billion, will reach 200 billion yuan of rural roads, investment in the Ministry of Transport, led, LED lighting enterprises are facing good opportunities for development.
December 5, 2008, the CPPCC National Committee Vice-Chairman, Science and Technology Minister Wan Gang, the national demonstration area for sustainable development of an advanced seminar on the work of the Award Ceremony, said “This year, in science and technology for stimulating domestic demand, promoting economic growth, technology The Department has proposed and implemented a number of specific measures. such as energy conservation, the ministry launched the “10 City 1000″ and “10 City, 10000,” Model Plan, and vigorously promote the new energy vehicles, and LED (semiconductor lighting) the application of energy saving lamps ; and if iron and steel, chemicals, electricity, new technology areas, Xin method of Tuiguang, have all received high Zhong Shi Liao Department of State and departments of strong support. We will also Chuangxin support the means of achieving greater Experimental application of new 技术and so on, to find the combination of economic and social development points to post after the subsidies and incentives for ways to support innovation and experimental practice area. “Semiconductor Lighting (LED lighting), is the last century, developed in 90 of the new generation of cold light that has traditional light sources unparalleled advantages: saving energy, protecting the environment (no mercury and other harmful substances), long life (50,000 hours), reducing maintenance costs, provide better lighting quality and improved lighting effects and safety. December 2008, China’s National Development and Reform Commission, to accelerate energy conservation and emission reduction, the phasing out of incandescent light, Energy Saving Lamps Promotion Development and Reform Commission has launched “China to phase out incandescent light, speed up the action plan to promote energy-saving lamps” preparation , the further implementation of energy conservation. December 11, 2008, by the Guangdong Science and Technology Department, Construction Department and the Dongguan Municipal People’s Government jointly organized the “high-power LED street lamp demonstration of Guangdong Province will promote the” convening in Dongguan, Guangdong province while the implementation of “thousand million” big power LED street lamp demonstration project was officially launched. Thinnest light in the world-Pinch EL light

Posted by:  /  Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

This is very cool idea for an EL lamp or an Electroluminescence Light. the designer is Shinyoung Ma. The Pinch EL Light. The Light design comprised of two parts, a cable with a clip holder and a EL sheet that clips onto the cable, once the light is clipped on it lights up.

The idea is that you have different el light that you clip on to the cable to change the look and mood of your room; you could choose different color el lights, or ones with different graphics.

This is a great idea, very clever yet simple, and it certainly would make things a lot easier when you wanted a new light fitting, unfortunately it is just a concept at the moment, let’s hope some manufacturer picks this cool design up.

The electroluminescent Star Wars’ light sabre

Posted by:  /  Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

They are a big improvement on the day-glow plastic models sold at the time of the first Star Wars blockbuster, but a high-tech toy light sabre currently on the market is sensitive to sunlight and users are restricted to fun-in-the-dark.
Professor David Officer, Director of the University’s Nanomaterials Research Centre, and Centre technician Shannon Bullock, are working to optimise the electroluminescent lamps inside the sabres. The pink hue of the particular toy sabre (modelled on the sabre of Jedi Council character Mace Windu) will fade in sunlight to the un-dyed, natural, blue-green colour emitted by the electroluminescent compounds.

Image: Professor David Officer demonstrates the electroluminescence of the popular Star Wars’ light sabre with research technitian Shannon Bullock.

Sold to Star Wars fans on the Internet and in the United States for between $370 and $616, the toys are powered by an ordinary 9-volt battery, and come in a variety of colours. Inside the sabre’s plastic tube is a rolled up, bendy strip of plastic – the electroluminescent lamp – less than 1mm in thickness. The lamps are constructed of layers of conductive materials, including the compounds of zinc sulphide and indium tin oxide, and the electrical circuitry is screen-printed onto the plastic.

Invented by American firm, Parks Sabres, and using technology developed by Christchurch company Screen Sign Arts, the sabres have made their way to Professor Officer and the Nanomaterials Research Centre. Professor Officer says the Centre has a long association of research with the Christchurch company, which is leading the development of this type of electroluminescent technology.

Ms Bullock is studying the light emitted by the lamps, analyzing its wavelength and structure, and optimising the production of white light. If they can develop the electroluminescent materials that produce white light, then that light can be dyed to a desired blend that is resistant to the damaging effects of sunlight.

The applications of this extend well beyond light sabres says Professor Officer. Once perfected, the electroluminescent lamps may replace the conventional glass bulb, which can lose up to 97 percent of its energy to heat, and which is costly to produce. Bulky, glass-tubed neon lighting could be replaced by bendy and extremely efficient plastic lamp strips. Ms Bullock’s next project is to make an electroluminescent t-shirt – screen-printing the circuitry onto the fabric.
